The Protagonish Demo is released!
It's been a busy month, but we have finally launched the playable demo of The Protagonish on Steam and itch.io!
So you can download and play for free, and see the game come to life! There's been a lot of work polishing animations (although more to come) and getting sound in, as well as a whole new recording session for the music. Richard's recording studio is a veritable toy barn of musical instruments, which makes for amazing fun when trying out ideas. We tried out themes on accordion, pump organ, cello, bowed guitar, box, Indian flute, recorder, and anything else that came to hand, and now have full recordings for each character!
We were also super lucky to be able to exhibit our game at Brilliant Indie Treasures in Brighton last month, a fringe event for the massive Develop festival. It was our first time publicly showing off the game, and was amazing to have dozens of people play, laugh and get excited for the full release of the game. Amazing veterans of the adventure game industry played, and we were alongside amazing developers like the amazing Tom Hardwidge showing Heir of the Dog in full costume, and Joe Richardson completing his renaissance inspired trilogy with Death of the Reprobate. I learnt so much from watching which lines people chose, where they got stuck, and what they wanted to do. Although I've been trying to get as much feedback as possible through the whole process, nothing can beat the patterns you see watching 30 people in quick succession play your game!
The demo we are releasing today is a polished version of what we showed in Brighton, and will also be showing at Timeless Gaming in Bury next week. Both events have been sponsored by the amazing people at Debug magazine, and it was great to meet them as well. If you haven't subscribed to Debug, do so quick! It's a fantastic British indie game magazine, of the highest professional quality, but with great reviews and scoops from the world of indie and retro games.
So now we just have to make the full game! It should only take a couple of months, but there are some complex puzzles to implement, and lots of testing as there are so many branching choices to the multiple endings. It's been amazing to see the feedback from new players already, there are many more fun behind-the-scenes videos and blog posts to come, so watch this space! No wait, play the demo and add to your wishlists!
